Why Software Configuration Management?

Trinem was founded in 2001 by James Wilson and Phil Gibbs. Before Trinem, James and Phil had previously worked as IT consultants for many years and met while working on a project that utilised CA technology. While working with the CA technology (now known as CA SCM), it became clear that CA had a very strong product in a market that was, and still is to some extent, considered niche.

In 2001, CA had an annual revenue of approximately $3 billion (now over $4 billion) and had a product portolio of approximately 1,200. Having so many products makes it difficult to provide highly-skilled resources for every CA customer. Since CA struggled to supply high-calibre consultants yet they had market leading technology, in a market that appeared to be 'undiscovered'; James and Phil incorporated Trinem and became a CA Partner with the sole purpose of delivering technical consulting services for CA's "CA SCM" product.

Product Development

Since its incorporation, Trinem has maintained its focus on Software Configuration Management, or "SCM", and has been involved with SCM projects with various vendors; CA, IBM and Borland, to mention a few. As part of working so closely with these vendors' customers, Trinem inevitably found gaps, shortfalls and opportunities to do things either better or differently.

Armed with this knowledge and experience, Trinem used this to start developing products that would fill these gaps, or compliment the SCM implementations from the larger vendors. One example of this might be Trinem's "Remote Transport Interface" product, or "RTI". CA's "CA SCM" product supports a wide variety of the Distributed Platforms (Windows, UNIX, Linux). However, Trinem was repeatedly working with large organisations that didn't just have systems on UNIX and Windows, they had 'N-Tier' systems that also included Tandem, VMS, iSeries or UNISYS, for example.

Trinem decided to build a product, RTI, that would enable CA SCM to work with these Mid-Range systems. The innovative way in which Trinem designed the product also meant that it did not have any reliance on CA SCM Agents - this meant that CA SCM customers could not only connect to Mid-Range platforms, but they could now connect to their existing 'Distributed' platforms without the need for an CA SCM Agent... Agentless CA SCM.

Not only were customers able to reduce their cost of ownership of CA technology (by reducing the time spent on maintaining and installing Agents), but they were also able to consolidate their SCM tool of choice to just one, CA SCM with RTI - Trinem knows of one customer that had four SCM products simply due to the various platforms they utilised.

Technical Consulting

Trinem has some of the most capable SCM consultants in the world. This ability is not only compounded in the technology that Trinem builds, but the solutions that are implemented for their customers. Trinem's consultants are constantly working on projects that present new challenges that require extensive experience and a high level of technical aptitude. As an example, Trinem's consultants have been involved with all of the following project types:

  • Continuous Integration Builds (Trinem wrote the CA SCM integration for Thoughtworks' CruiseControl),
  • Panopticode Scanning,
  • Static Code Analysis,
  • Quality Center Integrations,
  • Automated Software Deployments,
  • SCM & CMDB Implementations,
  • Automated Release Note Generation,
  • 3D Code Visualisation,
  • Web Based Document Management,
  • Web Based Release Management Interface,
  • Data Migration & Convergence.

Trinem constantly delivers for, and with, their customers. Consulting engagements reflect this as it is not unusual for Trinem to be engaged with a customer for years, not months. Trinem's clients consistently realise benefits and cost savings, which makes the business case and decision for re-engagement a simple one.
